thresh: hold

/THreSH(h)old/ (entrance)

1. the level or point at which you start to experience something, or at which something starts to happen 2. a strip of wood, metal, or stone forming the bottom of a doorway and crossed in entering a house or room. 3. the magnitude or intensity that must be exceeded for a certain reaction, phenomenon, result, or condition to occur or be manifested.

‘Threshold’ is a series of paintings that serves as an entry point into the unknown. Both a personal interrogation and a reflection on humanity, these houses sit on the edge of imagined landscapes inviting an inward passage home. The tension of their position on the horizon is softened by their open doors. Providing an entrance to a third space, we are invited to contemplate what it means to cross the threshold. What lay beyond the open door? The outer landscape is ours to see, the inner landscape is ours to imagine.

Farm House is a 12 x 16 inch gouache on paper.

Dwelling within the liminal space between being and becoming, this work serves as an open door between the inner and outer landscapes of our human experience. In this space, how do feelings of connection and community manifest? Visions of the future mingle with a sense of nostalgia. In one way, home place can be a catalyst for healing, for change. Yet, crossing the threshold can also reveal solastalgia--the loss of a sense of place while still residing in it. This series is a journey toward home within ourselves and within a rapidly changing world.
